When developing sprinting speed, you must have solid upper body development.

Why Upper-Body Strength is Necessary For Lower Body Speed

Many people who see sprinters or other track and field athletes seem to be under the misconception that, track athletes don’t have to seriously train the upper body. The reality is that no matter what sport you do, whether it’s tennis, golf, soccer or football, you have to address conditioning in a manner that includes upper-body, lower-body and the core.

If you want to develop great speed, you must have the strong upper-body to go along with a well conditioned lower body. Here is why. When a person begins his sprinting movement, it’s going to take raw explosive power in the legs to overcome the state of inertia. However, without strong upper-body and a strong core, sprint mechanics will fall apart in a split second. Moreover, it takes full-body compound exercises to develop killer explosiveness and speed. The exercises that I would recommend are:

  • front squats
  • back squats
  • stiff leg dead lift
  • hanging leg raise
  • clean and jerk
  • clean and press
  • power cleans

These are all compound movements that will assist in the development of explosive speed when programmed correctly.
