Keys To Explosive Jumping Power

Many people spend their entire lives working on, but never being successful at, dunking a basketball. It’s one of those things that athletes do that bring the crowd to its feet. Every great basketball player that I can think of could dunk. As coveted as the move is, only a small fraction of people who have ever enjoyed playing basketball have been able to dunk. And to be honest, the ability to dunk a basketball is a god given gift and either you have it or you don’t.

That being said, if you cannot dunk a ball, it may not be because you are physically incapable of dunking. You may not be harnessing your full potential. So, I’ll give you guys some jumping tips.

  1. Train your fast twitch fibers more than slow twitch fibers. In other words, stop doing so much long distance running when you run track. long distance stamina comes at the expense of short distance explosiveness.
  2. Shorten rest periods between sets when you exercise your legs. One thing that makes your body explosive is its ability to process ATP quickly, resulting in a fast contraction and relaxation of the muscle. When you shorten rest periods, you force your body to adapt and process ATP faster.
  3. Do full range of motion exercises for legs. When you do partial range of motion exercises, you may be precipitating muscular imbalances. That can inhibit the ability to jump higher.

Until next time … Good Luck
